How could they made the worse choice out of the 3?

Firstly an army is infront of them and they will be alerted if they released the herders, secondly they cant get through to HQ. Third there is no way in hell they could freeze to death at night, its not like they are wearing beach wear and Macus survive the night fine even though he is badly injured.

Is the situation differnet in the book for them to just let the herders go like that?

Firstly they had no wire, rope or cord in which to tie them up with which the movie erroneously showed they were flex cuffed in the movie.

It was the middle of Summer and Marcus I don't recall in the book or any subsequent interviews ever complaining about the cold that night or any other night!

There was a vote because killing them would have been murder of an innocent man and boys even if they might be Herders loyal or scouts for the Taliban with the radio. Shooting an unarmed herder and teenage boys is going to leave you in Fort Leavenworth for the rest of your life.

Just remember that hindsight is 20/20 and how many other patrols in the Afghanistan War now in its 15th year have been compromised by herders and their goats and have gone their separate ways. I know our SASR Troopers and Commandos have had this happen on numerous occasions!

If you are not willing to give up everything, you have already lost

Why not take the herders with them to the top of the mountain to make the rescue call?

This was a part of the movie/book I don't buy. The only man saying there was a vote is the only man that survived and coincidently enough, he was the deciding factor in the vote???

They had a team leader (Lieutenant) and IMO, he made/makes the call no matter what. Team leaders do not take votes, they make decisions.

Even if by some crazy off chance there was a vote...Out of complete respect for the Lieutenant and team leader Michael Murphy, I would never admit to a vote. It casts a great deal of disrespect on the memory of Lt. Murphy and his family.

How you can speak for every team leader on the face of the Earth is frankly amazing. Is it some form of hereditary omnipotence or do you just make things up occasionally?

If you've never been in a leadership role, then you wouldn't understand.
