shareHe didn't exactly take them back in time. He did, but also into an alternate universe. In the "main" MCU universe, there are no more Infinity Stones.

It's explained there in far better detail, but the short version is that for centuries the Sorcerer Supreme has guarded the Time Stone, in the form of the Eye of Agamotto. How it originally came to be on Earth was never mentioned, but likely in a manner similar to how the Mind Stone got here-- aliens done brought it.
Dr. Strange gave the Time Stone to Thanos in exchange for Tony Stark's life. Thanos later destroyed all six Infinity Stones. The Avengers traveled back in time to gather the Infinity Stones from points in time and space where they knew them to be, pre-Thanos. In doing so, they caused splits in the timeline, creating alternate realities. After defeating Thanos, Captain America traveled back to those points in time and replaced the borrowed Stones. The end result is that several new timelines exist that have all 6 Stones, while the timeline we've been following in the MCU films has none.
I would think putting them back together would cause to much temptation to happen that caused them to travel apart before. But maybe that is the creators idea and the next division will take them to another univerise. It is a idea to cause balance in all of them.
shareHe took them back to 1963--back after Avengers: Infinity War but before Avengers Endgame. He was trying to prevent the assassination of JFK because the plot had something to do with Jackie Kennedy wearing one of the Infinity Stones as a necklace in Dallas that day which caused the spacetkme continuum to go into "infinite flux". If the Infinity Stone isn't captured, JFK will be assassinated and all the Avengers will truly die.
