I loved the gay representation

Okay, I'll admit.. I only saw this movie because I heard there was going to be a lesbian couple in it. I'm gay, so a movie that people have been comparing to Bring It On that involves to queer girls is like heaven for me. I was really pleasantly surprised at how positive all the gay rep was. There was only one stereotypical gay character out of the 7+ gay characters in the movie. I thought the lesbian couple was really amusing. They weren't really a couple until the end though because it was more like one was hopelessly in love with her clueless teammate until the end when they walk off together (..with their hands on eachothers assetts). The best part was that it wasn't a big deal either. It was barely mentioned except for that hilarious line delivered by the 60 year old business man trapped in a 13 year olds girls body (something along the lines of "here you go, queer cheer.")

I thought it almost saved the movie for me. The positive representation definitely took it from a 4/10 to a 6/10 in my opinion.

The movie seemed conditionally not homophobic. On the whole I liked the movie and didn't really have any problems with it, and then Nick delivered the one line to Shawn about how chasing after Carly was gay. Most offensive thing in the world? No. But it did kind of make me feel like they were trying to be socially accepted by doing it opposed to having a completely gay friendly movie.

I'm still ok with the movie, that scene just strikes me as awkward and out of place. I am interested to hear your view on it though.

I caught that too. I also thought it was out of place but I figured he didn't really mean it in a derogatory way. He was just pointing out how Shawn was acting effeminate over Carly.. not "lame" or "stupid" like most people mean when they call something "gay".

The character Nick sort of redeemed himself later on though when Downey came onto him and he wasn't completely freaked out or disgusted like most homophobes would be.

I still kinda twinge at Nick using gay to enforce a stereotype. I think it bothers me so much becuase I thought for sure he was going to come of the closet by the end.

I bet they had an alternate ending with Nick somehow hooking up with Downey at the end of the night. Probably didn't test as well with audiences if they did.

LOL that is the only reason i saw it also, i heard there was a lesbian character i thought it was pretty funny "theres alot you dont know about her". Goign to the part when nick said that i didn see that unfair that they would use "GAY" to describe he's feelings for her, but overall it was a decent movie.

The way I remember it, was that at the end, the girls didn't walk off together, holding each other. One girl was holding the other one. It was the same as the entire movie was, a lesbian/bisexual crushing on a totally clueless girl.

lol..

I'm sorry but two high schools jocks who are best friends are almost definitely going to refer to someone or something as gay. not because of what the word gay means, but just because that is how they talk and they ARE essentially ignorant dudes... think about it :)

The issue you should be focusing on is how people use the word gay WAY too much, in every day sentences and just too much

After the credits, the two girls kiss... but it turns out Bianca was only trying to teach the straight girl how to kiss a guy. Bianca had game.

Don't tell me what I can't do!

reply

yes , you miss the best part ,after the credit, they are kissing, though it seems a teaching thing, but the situation is hilarious, both two girls enjoy it.

I thought Margo Harshman's character, the "I'm just saying" girl, was a lesbian also.

I have to say the coach had some of the most funniest lines, it was pretty hilarious whichever way you look at it, especially the impromptu dance sequence, that will go down as legendSource:Fired up - Movie Reviewshttp://moviereviews.noskram.com/2009/09/movie-reviews-for-fired-up
