US release date moved up to Feb 26
According to Fox.
shareIn the past, burying a movie in deep winter was not a good sign.
But due to past successes ( American Sniper raked it in last year despite the release in deep winter) and the overcrowding of the supposed summer season for tentpoles, major studios are now expanding release dates to include the winter months. DEADPOOL, which is getting strong buzz, is slated for release on February 12. Note that WOLVERINE 3 is penciled in for a March 3, 2017 release date ( and that is a likely blockbuster because it is HJ's farewell portrayal of Wolverine).
The new release date will now allow the movie to be free from the spillover effect of BATMAN VS SUPERMAN ( March 25) and the upcoming impact of CAPTAIN AMERICA which would go against the second week of EDDIE THE EAGLE had the latter retained its April 1 rescheduled date.
However, it will now go against 3 other WIDE but lesser-known releases --

We'll see...
I wondered why the film was being released then, especially in the US before the UK. Makes sense now you explain it like that. Will the release date coincide with the winter Olympics too?
It's going to be interesting to see how this film does. Eddie the Eagle is a particularly British figure, a no hoper who defied all the odds and despite not coming anywhere near close to winning, still had a go anyway. In fact I think he may still be the British ski jump record holder. Not sure if anybody outside the UK will remember Eddie but then again Cool Runnings did a similar thing in telling the tale of the Jamaican bobsled team and that did good business. Next up, maybe the legendary Eric the eel, who competed at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney?
I think the Winter Olympics will next be held in 2018 - if I am not mistaken, I think it is held in years not competing with the Summer Olympics. It is the Summer Games which are being held in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro...but I think a sports movie released earlier in the year could relate to the upcoming sports fever of the Olympics to some extent.
From what I can gather, the film adaptation is not going to be very faithful to Edwards's actual biopic ( even the character played by Hugh Jackman is fictional) but it seems they will draw on the competitive and never-say-die spirit of Eddie the Eagle to weave a story of inspiration. Not sure if it is going to be a sports-comedy as originally touted... but now Box Office Mojo classifies it as a drama. Maybe it will draw on both elements of storytelling?
I am hoping that a trailer will be released fairly soon as the US release date is less than 3 months away.
Do you think they are really going to film a music video for this movie? I do think it is super cool that Hugh and Taron sang a song that will be in the credits. If there is a music video, I would hope it would be released within the next couple of months, possibly in February to go along with the movie.
Hopefully, yes
But maybe that will depend on when Hugh returns to the USA, as he is expected to be in Australia ( his concert series and the holidays) till maybe early next year? Depends also on his schedule - is he or isn't he going to do that rumored cameo for APOCALYPSE?
