Where's "Ron"?
I was looking forward to this a while back when I heard Rupert Grint was playing the lead and today I see that he is not in the film at all. Does anyone know why he was replaced or backed-out?

shareI think the original film rights were sold to a group of producers headed by Matthew Vaughn. Vaughn has worked with Taron Egerton in the recent hit KINGSMAN. Also, Hugh Jackman had a test screening with Taron to get a feel of their screen chemistry... and if I recall right, Hugh was also consulted on the hiring of Taron in the role.

Several actors, including George MacKay, Jamie Bell and Daniel Kaluuya, were considered for the Eddie role.
However, Egerton clinched the part after performing in what was described to me as a 'magical' screen-test opposite Jackman.
The test was filmed in New York, where Jackman is starring in the Broadway production of Jez Butterworth's Royal Court hit The River.
Thanks baj2...I had done a Google search and came up with nothing. Shame really...Rupert is a good actor, especially as those lovable bumbling hero types.
shareWell, it benefits the movie. Egerton is a far, far superior actor.

I saw this movie listed on Rupert's page awhile back and was excited for him that he was getting a lead role and then I saw the commercial for it and was confused, because the guy playing Eddie was definitely not Rupert. I really don't care about this film one way or another, but I would really like to see Rupert Grint have a chance to show what he can do in a lead role.
shareAgain, it doesn't really matter. Egerton is a much better actor than Rupert Grint.

You seem snobbishly confident with your assessment.. Yea, he was good in Kingmen...but he's been in like 3 things. Slow down. You make it sound like he's the next Daniel Day Lewis

And the only good thing Rupert Grint has ever been in is Harry Potter (so don't pretend like he has some impressive portfolio) and he was always considered the weak link in a group whose other two members were Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson... who definitely aren't the next Daniel Day Lewis or Meryl Streep.
Meanwhile, Eggsy, Edward, Mad Teddy and Eddie are all clearly different people and all in good movies (well, Mad Teddy not so much, but that movie being bad is entirely Tom Hardy's fault).
Rupert Grint faded entirely after Harry Potter, meanwhile Egerton became an overnight star on the look for several high profile roles; and already with a franchise that became so in big part thanks to his charisma as the leading man.
I can keep going, but I think I've already given enough reason to be confident in my assessment.

I think I recall seeing something about Rupert dropping off the project long ago. I don't think he auditioned when they finally decided to go through with the film and make it. Egerton got it because he aced the screen test. I love Rupert, but Egerton is a better actor.
Don't know how Rupert would have done here but Taron Egerton is an actor to watch, he's been fantastic so far in the 2 films I've seen him in.
And if anyone is interested in a review for this movie- https://youtu.be/umvewb4c1Dc
