Yes. Both are based on true stories that occurred at the Calgary Olympics. In fact, the real Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards is friends with a couple of guys who were on the 1988 Jamaican bobsled team.
Based on reports, it seems that the EDDIE THE EAGLE film adaptation was inspired by the true story of Michael Edwards but the screenplay is mostly fictional. For one, the character of Bronson Pearson ( played by Jackman) is fictional, so I guess their relationship ( which seems to be the anchor to the movie) is also a work of screenplay fiction
But the story of inspiration has to be the story of Michael Edwards's attempt to represent his country as best as he could.
I could be wrong, but I think at one point in the movie, someone even references the Jamaican bobsled team(or at least some Olympic team from Jamaica).
Both stories had something in common such as the Hope and determination of the non sponsored underdog. They also had to overcome the snobbery of some National and Olympic Officials who tried to stop them competing, by any means possible, to prevent the potential for 'Embarrassment' whilst representing their Country in their chosen Sport. They did not win any Medals but they did win the hearts of the viewing public and they realised their dream of becoming an Olympian. The very spirit of the Olympic Games was in danger of being overshadowed by the cut throat 'Win at all costs' mind set of the major competing national teams.
Imo, The Olympic Games needs inspiring characters like 'Eddie the Eagle'.
Btw, Does anyone remember who won the Silver or the Bronze Medal in Eddie's event in Calgary without looking it up?
Wow, I started this thread months ago and I had no idea that the Jamaican Bobsled team would be MENTIONED in this damn! I did not even realize it was the same year.
