Eddie seemed to be a bit...special.
How would a goof like him get that far?
sharefrom seeing pictures of the real person my answer is 'maybe'
i think the wiki page says when he placed last with scores in the 70's the 2nd to last person had a score in the 100's.
but either way, I sure as heck could not go down a 90 meter ski jump, so even if he was mentally disabled he still accomplished something extraordinary.
The real Story of Eddie Edwards highlights everything that is wrong with the British Olympic system. He was a pretty poor ski-jumper. However he was the best Britain had because they showed no interest in this sport whatsoever. At the time people in the UK were divided into those who derided him and thought he shouldn't participate because he wasn't world-class, and those who admired his grit and determination to do his best despite no funding or assistance from the Olympic bodies. One look at a ski jump showed he had a lot of guts and was worthy of respect. Good luck to him I hope he makes a lot of money off the back of this movie.

he was a good skier. only just missed being in the opympic team. he decided to try for the skii jump because he thought it was his last chance to take part in the olympics - he migh be too old by the next one. it is hardly his fault that the qualification level required was low enough for him to get in, that was up to the olympic officials. that he could do the jumps at all, given his lack of experience, is pretty amazing.

Let me be facetious for a moment.
He probably is because he was in his 20's when he took it up and most of all is British! Any Brit who decides that it's the sport for them has got to have a screw loose. (In his case in a good way)
