...all that head nodding, shaking, wiggling, wobbling and waggling just made me want to grab her head and hold it still for a moment. She was adorable though in spite of it. I have only seen the first season so far, does she keep her head dynamically occupied throughout the later seasons as well?
No, it was his reaction to unwelcome comments I was referencing. I thought you were being a bit harsh on Olivia Hallinan. Does she overdo it? Absolutely, but in her defense she is the only pretty young girl in the main cast so she has to fill that role on her own. Besides she is not the only actress guilty of overdoing the head movements. Claudie Blakely also does her share of head shaking and is an enthusiastic employer of the grossly exaggerated "look away" head movement.
Well to answer my own question Olivia Hallinan markedly tones down the excessive head movements in seasons two and three, and proves herself to be a fine dramatic actress as well. I would love to see her in more costume dramas. I think she would be great as Estella in 'Great Expectations', Lizzie Hexam in 'Our Mutual Friend' and Fanny Price in 'Mansfield Park'.
I can say that I did notice the exuberant head movements but I wouldn't say to the point that they annoyed me too much. I am quite pleased to hear that she's toned them down, at least a little, in the coming series as I haven't watched all of the second series as yet.
I think she's quite okay, she serves her purpose in this role but she's not as controlled as you often find with BBC leading ladies that's for sure. She certainly has the 'look' for classical productions, but I can see why her more lively way of moving can look out of place in period dramas; they often strive for a more constrained vibe for the ladies, but you've got to remember she is still quite young and a jovial spirit whilst being a thoughtful soul. You gotta watch those red-heads!...free spirits!

I have watched seasons one, two and three many times, since I bought the DVD's. And she shakes her head just as much as she always has.
A horrible, untalented actress who also lacks a lot in the looks department.
All that being said, I stand corrected regarding Minnie and Alf. I didn't like Minnie in the beginning, but now I love her, she is adorable.
My favourite actress of the whole is Miss Ellison, or Mrs Brown as she is now. She is wonderful and extremely telented.
Julia Sawahla is very talented, but the whispering voice drives me mad sometimes. And Miss Lane lusting after a married man did not grant her any extra points.
She was stupid to turn down James, and to steal his son was not nice.

Well watch them again and this time pay attention because you are flat out wrong. She nearly shakes her head off in season one but in seasons two and three she doesn't shake it anywhere near as much.

No, she is talented and pretty. Tell me Jane did Laura Timmins have an affair with your husband Charles Bingley? Is that why you dislike her so?
I love Mrs Brown - she's simply fabulous isn't she! I do think Miss Lane carries a lot of the episodes, but I agree; the whispering drives me insane sometimes! But for the most part, she shines. I have a soft spot for the character of Alfie too, he's a bit of a charmer in his own boyish way.
