Sorry Tarantino, but this round goes to Robby Rodriguez!

I'm happy I had the chance to see the Grindhouse double feature in the theatre. It was such an amazing and memorable experience. I went there mainly for Tarantino... and left as a new Rodriguez fan.

Quentin Tarantino is my all time favourite filmmaker... but he missed the point exactly where Rodriguez nailed it. It was supposed to be over the top, bad and cheesy dialogues, exaggerated gore and action, "edgy" characters, etc.

Tarantino tried too hard to integrate his trandemarks like long dialogues, character development and a slow installation of the violence. In the end, the only interesting character was Stauntman Mike. The dialogues were boring and really didn't serve the plot so much.

The result was: Tarantino made his worst movie, while Rodriguez made his second best after Sin City.

THIS ISNT TARANTINO'S WORST FILM...THIS IS ALSO NOT RODRIGUEZ'S BEST ORSECOND BEST...EL MARIACHI AND DESPERADO OUTRANK IT FOR STARTERS...I DO LOVE GRINDHOUSE THOUGH...I ALSO SAW IT IN THEATERS...I LIKE BOTH HALVES EQUALLY THOUGH...THEY REPRESENT TWO KINDS OF GRINDHUSE FEATURES...THE IN YOUR FACE GORE FEST WITH CHEESE DIALOGUE AND THE DRAWN OUT EASY RIDER STYLE ROAD TALE JAMMED WITH ACTION AND CHEESE...ADD IN THE TRAILERS,INTERMISSION AND THE OTHER NOVELTIES AND YOU HAVE A REAL GOOD TIME.

I agree with OP on everything except with a slight difference of ranking. I was already a Rodriguez fan due to El Mariachi (hated the overproduced sequels though). Sin City 1 is definitely RR's best but I put El Mariachi after that and THEN Planet Terror. I agree that Death Proof is QT's worst. There are some things to like about it but it generally sucks. It barely beats H8ful 8 for worst.

Generally I love Tarantino's films and only some of Rodriguez's. However, RR wins this showdown. It's weird. In Sin City, QT directs one scene and it is the worst part of the movie Robert brings out the worst in him.

I like Planet Terror more, too. But I did like Death Proof, at least the first half of it. The second half seemed like a watered-down retread of the first half. I didn't see the point.

I usually like the long Tarantino rants. Not in Death Proof. They meant nothing and went nowhere. Tedious. I only really enjoyed the car chase and its end.

Exactly! And I don't "hate" Death Proof and I don't consider it a "bad movie"... but it is the one and only time for me in a Tarantino's movie when I would had cut in the dialogues. It was... just not... as interesting as usually.

And yeah, I love the whole Rodriguez's Mexico trilogy (including Once Upon a Time in Mexico which I find underrated). And it is among my favourites from Rodriguez as well with From Dusk Till Dawn.

I concur.

The long stretch of initial dialogue really slowed things down and wasn't particularly compelling. None of the characters were memorable except for Kurt Russell's charismatic Stuntman Mike. The action was good. The ending was... there, but there's not much else to say about it.

There were glimpses of the grindhouse aesthetic, but, as you accurately point out, it was sublimated by Tarantino's tics.

Weirdly, I enjoyed the re-released standalone version a bit more.
