Question about the surprise ending (warning: Spolier)

The redneck hints that he has a grudge against the townfolk because they sent his daddy into the caves and he never returned. Since Ed is hill folk he might have somehow evolved into living with the cave creatures and wouldn't side against them. That's the best I can do with no explanation offered.

His motivation was it would kill any chance of another sh!tty Descent sequel.

I thought when he said that his Great Grandad was sent to explore the caves they found through the mine and never came back it was implying that was how the creatures started so in effect they're his relatives and that's why he protects them.

The Doge did what a Doge does when a Doge does his duty to a Duke.

Ed's dad or grandpa was told to explore the cave and vanished so he's pissed about that.

My other thought was he has a "quid pro quo" type deal going on with the crawlers. Sort of like the gas station attendant in The Hills Have Eyes. Ed makes sure people or animals find their way to the cave and in return he gets to live. Perhaps Ed was out late one night hunting and killed a deer. A crawler stumbles upon him and his kill and Ed offers it to him in a sign of submission. Crawler take the deer, Ed gets to live and a deal is struck with no words. Just a idea.

Thats what im saying. Why did he pick up the blonde chick and save her in the beggining only to shovel the sheriff's deputy in the face and feed her to the mole monsters. He assisted in the rescue at the beginning.
