Claire's + Edward's treatment

I just watched the movie and I thought it was alright...a bit too slow at times...and not the best drama I've seen recently...but the ending made the whole thing work somehow.

BUT (maybe I didn't pay enough attention and missed something) what kind of treatment did Claire and Edward get? They seemed perfectly fine and suddenly they get an injection, start seizing and end up worse than before.
Why did Veronika think Edward wouldn't remember her?
What did they do to them?

The whole institution was weird + I didn't trust the doctor (Thwelis) up until the end.

Well, can somebody elaborate?

In the book, Mari, Claire (name changed) and Edward both receive a version of electroshock therapy. It's been a few years since I read this book (which I loved), but I remember this therapy as being portrayed as positive. Both Mari and Claire enjoyed these experiences, claiming it led them to something called astral projections. These ladies had out of body experiences and claimed to travel the world as a sort of flying spirit. For one of them it was spoken of in a very positive manner.

In fact, as I recall, Villette, the Doctor, and the therapy were viewed in a much more positive manner. The Doctor and Veronika, as well as other patients, had more enlightening conversations. They tried to sort of project a villian theme upon the Doctor in this film version, which I do not remember as a theme from the book.

Any others who have read it and call recall better?
