Was it shot on both video and film?

Why did the director choose to shoot some on shaky video? What was the purpose of that?

I haven't seen the movie yet but that's usually done to give films a sense of reality.

The use of a hand-held camera generally brings you closer to the characters. Think "home movie" effect. Also, he uses hand-held in scenes of particular significance (ie when Lea's husband dislocates his shoulder).

I found the occaisional use of video a bit disconcerting to be honest. I'm not really sure what it added to the film.

my guess is it was shot on HD, so some of the faster movement had the video look

I've just watched it on BluRay and I couldn't see any part that looked different. Do you just mean that some of it was hand held with shaky shots or do you mean the actual picture quality - contrast, sharpness and visible lines?

What I did notice was that the deleted scenes were of a lower quality but that was probably due to them being treated at a different time.
