This movie really isn't that bad

I liked it.

exactly, I think people are just stuck on the past that they are blinded by their familiarity with older movies. I highly doubt that all these people that go so hard for the originals even cared that much about the originals back when they came out!

and I agree, if they are just going to hate, they need to just stay on the other board

I have no problems with remakes but if you are going to remake something, at least try and make it your own. You can't remake the magic of the original so you shouldn't try and that is where they went wrong.

I didn't have much of a problem with it, and in fact thoroughly enjoyed some of the dialogue. I LOVE what he said to the girl about getting sweaty and disappointed and how that was reserved for the other guy. Super sweet. I lol'd hardcore at black guy expressing his disinterest in staying on the bus with Ren during that whole thing. Also love what his uncle said to the reverend about what he'd gone through and how he wasn't sure the reverend's daughter was good enough for Ren, lol. Some great back and forth going on there.

And I thought Penn's reprised role was done very well. I lol'd again when he was down in the line up at football and did that little shoulder roll at the guy in front of him.

I agree. I only got it recently because it was part of a "double feature" pack with the original, which I'm quite fond of. I'd heard all the fuss about how it wasn't anything (or was too much) like its predecessor. But, I figured since I now owned the movie anyway, I might as well give it a shot.

Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised. Several key scenes were even improved on, such as the opening. Ariel's brother and his friends were much more of a presence in this version, more befitting the impact their tragedy had on the town, rather than the "consequence of spiritual corruption" it kind of morphed into in the original. On that note, Dennis Quaid's performance as Rev. Moore seemed... odd at first, like he was always on the verge of being physically ill, until I really thought about it. This was a guy who'd lost his eldest child, an only son that he seemed quite close to (as noted when Ren unwittingly took the same seat while watching him practice a sermon), and was now so distracted by his overwhelming grief that he didn't notice his surviving child's serious emotional distress- namely that she had a fairly obvious death wish. In that light, not looking at well and acting somewhat wooden is the least of his issues. Also quite enjoyed Ariel getting in on the climactic fight with Chuck's goons near the end, in defense of her friend no less. Likewise for Andy and his "Play fair, punk" knock-out line when one of them tried to take Ren out with a cheap shot with a brick.

On the whole, do I prefer it over the original? No, but it's not without merits that are entirely its own.

It wasn't awful like most remakes but still pointless and I don't want hear we should remake every good movie for a new generation. If kids don't want to watch movies that were made before they were born. forget the abortions that got away

It's always a bad idea to remake a movie that is a product of its time. You could get away with some stuff in 80s movies you simply can't do anymore. Some things don't work now because times change, just like some 70s or 90s movies can only be made in their respective eras. A plot like this just incites laughter today, and the movie doesn't work because of it.

I looked up mediocre in the dictionary and this film appeared as an example.
