"Flop" might be a little harsh, but I am somewhat skeptical that this can/will be successful, even if the reboot factor isn't taken into consideration.

These characters were created in the early 1960s (the Torch dates back even further), and while they were immensely popular for a very long time, after all this time they now seem somewhat old-fashioned and quaint, especially to younger audiences. Naturally the creative team will bend over backward to "update" them for modern times, and thus alienate the long-time fans who don't want major changes to characters they love. Either way, 50% of your audience will not be happy and bad-mouth the film to all who will listen.

I'm very aware Superman and Batman have been around much longer, and have been successful with "updating", but the major storytelling factor with the Fantastic Four is the group/family dynamic. Most superhero teams, like the Avengers, are groups of rugged individualists who band together to stave off a certain disaster. Beyond being related by blood and by marriage, the Fantastic Four all have in common the unique experience of the accident that made them what they are today that only they can share together. If the film is true to the characters, it's this sense of family/commitment that just doesn't resonate with today's audiences, no matter how popular the characters were in the past.

Could it be that the real reason this is being made is because these were Stan Lee's favorite characters, and the movie will be yet another "Thanks a million, Stan" tribute to him?

It didn't seem to harm The Incredibles' success.

The superhero quartet β€” the first characters created for Marvel Comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby β€” will be played by Pedro Pascal

as Reed Richards (aka Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm (aka the Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm (aka the Human Torch) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm (aka the Thing).
