Am I the only one who sees the resemblance?

Let me start by saying I enjoyed this film, so I’m not trying to knock it or be negative. I’m just stating an observation.

Water for Elephants has many similarities to Titanic. We have the young good looking man who stows away on a large vehicle that he was not supposed to be on. He meets a young, attractive, and wealthy woman who is already taken by an older, more powerful, and wealthy man. This man has a body guard who watches and protects the wealthy couple.

The story is told in present day by the now old Jacob. In the case of Titanic, it was told in present day by the now old Rose. They end up falling desperately in love, but find it difficult to escape from the clutches of the wealthy man and his body guard. That is, until there is a catastrophe and the vehicle on which they met goes down in a blaze of glory.

Overall, I liked the movie quite a bit. I cheered when Rosie killed August. Do any of you see the resemblance to Titanic?

I never said Marlena was older. In fact, I clearly stated that she was young.

I realize that in the film August and Marlena were struggling financially until they purchased Rosie and learned her commands. Shortly after, they started selling out. The point is, August and Marlena had the nicest car in the train, they owned the circus, they drank often, and wore nice clothes. They were very obviously the wealthiest people on that train. Through the eyes of all of their employees, they were most certainly wealthy.

Maybe I see these similarities because I’m a guy and see many if not most romantic movies as being very similar. It just struck me as very funny that WFE and Titanic shared many similar traits. Honestly, I like both movies (don’t tell my guy friends).

A tale?

.."while August is pretty much the most dynamic and complex character in WFE.)."

In the book August suffers from paranoid schitzophrenia (sp?), which makes him complex and cruel.

I agree.

I thought this while watching the entire film. Especially the begin in modern day with an older version of the main character and have them tell the story of their life to someone else.

"Don't Be Stupid. This is the shootout..."

It's also really similar to Moulin Rogue. The man who finds work in a big establishment and falls for the star performer and they have a secret affair.

i agree about the similarities, it doesnt take away from the story to have the similarities! WFE was more about his experience while titanic was about their story. i also love that the ending in WFE is happier. yes both old narrators are old and alone, but they got the chance to experience life together.

There's just a possibility that I will kiss a doorknob.

The moment I was watching it i remembered Titanic, and especially when he starts talking about the show and the camera starts revealing the tent and stuff and the music becomes very appealing and high it's the same camera work when introducing titanic for the first time. even the whole story structure is very much the same.... I thought only me would notice this but I was shocked to read your post.... :)
