Pattinson and Witherspoon virtually don't have chemistry AT ALL

They don't even make as brother and sister or mother and son. There is just NO spark between them. It's just awkward to see them together in a scene. They should not be cast together in a movie ever again.

None whatsoever. I was looking forward to seeing this film after reading the book and was ecstatic when Reese Witherspon was cast as Marlena. Then I found out Robert Pattinson was cast as Jacob and my heart sank but I still hoped for the best. Sadly, I did not buy them being together at all and it really hurt the film to me.

I'd beg for some forgiveness but begging's not my business.

reply

They didn't have much of a rapport with each other on screen, it's true.

Born when she kissed me, died when she left me, lived whilst she loved me

reply

I agree.

The movie moved along painfully slow because of this.

As I watched this movie I felt this was a role that DiCaprio would have absolutely crushed about 10 years ago if he were placed in this movie.

reply

I know, she had more chemistry with Christoph Waltz.

I pronounce you man and wife. Proceed with the execution.

reply

You're right - this is the first time the total lack of chemistry between actors actually distracted me from the movie.

reply

She was really a little too old to play the part...should have been a younger actress..

reply

Not only that, I was bothered by the love scene... she get's smacked, he gets beat, and then they run off together and have at it... it just felt like a reason to stick Mr. "Heartthrob" in a sexy scene before the film ended.
Did it work out the same in the book? Because it felt like a shoehorned scene.

No its the same way in the book. The movie'didn't try to throw in a gratuitous sex scene

reply

I kept wondering if they even liked each other offscreen.

RIP Heath Ledger 1979-2008

reply

I thouht the same; also, both the actress and her character look a bit old for him..

reply

I thought that Marlena was supposed to be older than Jacob so that didn't bother me. I too thought there wasn't much chemistry and that she looked better with Christoph Waltz. Of course I'm prejudiced because he's the reason I watched the movie.

I heard that they originally wanted Scarlett Johansson for Marlena and think that would have been perfect. Witherspoon is beautiful but she lacks the wow factor that Johansson would have brought to it. As for the love scene all I could think was that's it? Not that I wanted to see something more graphic but it lacked the intensity of people supposedly madly in love. You know something is off when the lead actress has more chemistry with the one playing her crazy and abusive husband than the guy playing her true love.

And they paid her to kiss him that many times? Life is so unfair, LOL!

I wonder how much of the lack of chemistry between RP und RW is due to the fact that he really cannot act well - sorry, I give everybody a chance, even watched my share of Kristen Stewart films to see if it was Twilight that makes her bad, but in her case, as now in Rob's, sorry, guys, not much talent there...I'm sad to say, because I do enjoy watching films, but I also enjoy well-acted films so much more...;-)

Christoph Waltz was the only redeeming thing about this film, this in retrospect totally unnecessary and forgettable film. The story was so old, the circus animals hard to bear (just for the fact that they were there really), the framing The Notebook-style, while well-acted, gave too much away...

I will forget this film now ---- what film??? ;-)

reply

And here I thought I was the only one!

I am a huge fan of the both, but the chemistry just didn't work for me either.

I thought Rob and Rosie has the best chemistry.<3
