Why the teacher or the office say "one accident"?

Thanks I was confused because someone say on the board something about the fathers beging killed

Both Jacobs parents were killed in a car accident. They were ran off the road by a drunk driver in the book. I'm not sure what the Dean in the film said to Jacob. He may have said it was a "one car" accident as in no one else was involved in the occurrence.
