"Oh my gosh! I'm going to quit vet school with one final exam to go -- in the middle of a depression -- and ride the rails in search of less gainful employment after my parents who mortgaged our house to pay for me to finish college died!"

All I can say is, take a moment to imagine what would happen today, if the same situation occurred.

The guy would not have lasted in school as long as Jacob did.

Somebody didn't read the book.

reply

Yeah, god, that whole "depression" thing ... pfffft. Like it would make it hard to find work or somethin'.

Seriously! I haven't read the book from what I understand, he left school not at his finals, but nearing them. THAT is plausible. Here it's like ooooook, isn't it pretty messed up/disrespectful to just say "Screw this" and throw away 6 years of work that your parents MORTGAGED THEIR HOUSE FOR?

No matter what the book said, in that day and age, and during such dire economic times, I am sure the school admin would have let him finish the exam before informing him, giving him a better chance in future. The parents were already dead, so there's nothing he could do. People had more of a stiff upper lip back then. Someone would have said "Let the boy finish the examination."
