Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke were divorced in real life at the time. It would make for a really authentic relationship between the parent characters and elevate the film’s brilliance even higher.
I thought Arquette was perfect in the part and honestly cannot imagine Uma being better. Also the relationship in the film gradually developed into an ‘amicable divorce’ and I’m not sure whether Thurman and Hawke have enough of a one to work together regularly over twelve years!
Why did they get divorced in real life? Or why would any guy who has been in a committed relationship with Uma Thurman want to leave her? She is one of the sexiest women to have ever existed and has really amazing presence and her family is really cool (her dad is a Tibetan Buddhist monk and scholar, her mom has some foreign royal lineage, her stepdad was psychedelic guru Timothy Leary). She seems like a relationship with her would be like hitting the jackpot!
They have never given clear reasons for the split to my knowledge, which of course has led to tabloid speculation about infidelities etc. I guess they just suffered the fate of so many high-profile Hollywood marriages and couldn’t take the pressure.
