Please explain boyfriend's name

Why is the boyfriend called El Guero? I looked it up and it appears to be a Mexican slang for anyone of lighter hair? This just doesn't make any sense to me.
I'm not sure I'm going to be able to follow this show, too many characters and it seems like they are going to be doing the time back and forth.

I bet it gets cancelled after 1st season.

"[T]oo many characters"? La Reina, the Governor-wannabe, his wife who's running operations in the States, and his right-hand man who's been promoted to Captain the operations in Mexico. Am I missing a few big players?

If you feel this way about this show, you should definitely avoid "The Wire." Many characters and arcs, but if memory serves, only one flashback. A brilliant show, but lots and lots of characters to keep track of.

Guero means white guy

The IMDB message boards you either die a good poster,or live long enough to become the troll

You are right "guero" means blond, somebody who has blond hair, is a Mexican slang.
Is for affection somebody call her boyfriend "peanuts" or whatever you want to call it, she uses that slang because that guy is different from the rest of Mexican who usually have black hair. If you can't follow this story because so many characters I advise to continue watching "Sesame Street".

You people don't have to be so mean. I voiced my opinion about the show and I get snarky comments about my intelligence. The world needs more kindness right? What are you doing about that?

Nicknames don't have to make sense to anyone other than the person who handed it out and perhaps the guy being called it.

Anyway......

1-It was the name of the character from the book. I don't recall the description of the character, so if the actor doesn't match the character described in the book blame the casting director.

2-Maybe the character had lighter hair as a kid and the nickname is from then. It stuck despite his hair darkening.

3-Slang has a way of mutating. It's original meaning was one thing, but over time it changes to include other meanings. Perhaps, it has taken on meaning besides "light hair". AS someone else said on the thread, "white guy". Maybe the character got the name because he's from Texas - an American - as opposed to his "co workers" who are Mexican born. Maybe it describes a behavior or way of speaking rather than a physical attribute.

Point being, it's hard to "make sense" if it without the origin story.
