Why not develop into a weekly series?

Its obviously very popular, they've made a ton of TV movies. Why not develop this into a weekly series? Has this even been discussed?

Tom Selleck told Rachel Ray when he was on her show promoting Thin Ice, that he has indeed been asked about doing a weekly series out of Jesse Stone, but he feels that the show is much better by just turning out two hour movies.........

I agree with Tom. A weekly series would be way too much. With annual or semi-annual movies, they can spend more time on the production and writing and it shows in the quality of the films.

I could maybe see it as part of a rotation, kind of like how they use to do the "NBC Mystery Movie". For you youngsters in the audience, NBC did a two hour movie every week back in the early seventies, where they rotated the characters each week instead of giving each set of characters a weekly series: McCloud, Columbo, and McMillan and Wife. I imagine that even the young'uns know Columbo and probably have heard of the others.

If Jesse Stone was a once a month movie with a rotation of three others, I think that would be the way to go if the frequency was to be increased. Weekly, nah. Too easy to get tired of it and too easy for the writing to descend into cliche pap when that many scripts are required.

I love the books and even though they are different I love the movie series. I would love a series but think it might ruin it (although Spencer For Hire worked as a series). I enjoy the movies because they are done with quality. But if they do a series with the existing cast I'll watch. It just needs to be done with quality, good promotion, and time to find their audience.

The way the Brits do a crime series (season) is to shoot three or four 90 min movies. I would say they are maybe the best when it comes to that department. I absolutely love that the Jesse Stone movies take their time and I think the series wouldn't be nearly as good if it had to be 22 episodes a season.

You wouldn't wanna eat Thanksgiving turkey all year round either - Jesse Stone is like a special, good treat, that only comes around once in a while.

Picture, I agree.
Prime Suspect. Cracker.
Selleck said CBS wanted him to do it as an hour long weekly series & he realized it'd become a crime of the week series, which, of course, any American network would want.
Ergo, Tom did Bluebloods, which could use an expanded format, too.
We could use more McClouds & Columbos.

Carpe Noctem!
