The dialogue tried to be too clever

When all of the writers got together playing poker etc, the back and forth banter was too quick and precise, with no room to breathe. Like noir dialogue on steroids.
No one or group talks like that.
And it was hard to follow.

I did like the behind the curtain of Citizen Kane tho.
I always thought Orson Welles wrote it.

Plus it piqued my interest in 'Heart of Darkness'.

I agree with you. I'm seemed like it was trying to be smart throwing in names that they expected the audience to know.

reply

He's imitating the style of the films of the era. Have you seen the Maltese Falcon?

reply

Bingo.

reply

Not so much imitating as caricaturing and exaggerating. I've seen all three versions of "The Maltese Falcon", with Ricardo Cortez, Warren William, and Humphrey Bogart.

reply

This was perhaps the biggest failure of the movie. Fincher was clearly imitating a style he might like but didn't quite know how to re-create.

reply

it is a bit glib.

reply

"I always thought Orson Welles wrote it." -> and you were correct.

this movie greatly downplays orson's role in writing the script.
