So Optimus shakes off Jetfire's parts once the end fight is over but for some reason he looks bulkier... did he keep leftover power or upgrade permanently?

He looked really big and was insanely strong with them but.... he dropped them. ALL of them!
He will have a new set of really nice things in the new movie, don't want to spoil anything but damn he's a beast in that film :D
Ok now I really hasve to ask did you ever watch the Original Cartoon Series?. If you did you would recall Posessing the Matrix of Leadership changed the size and look the the Autobot posessing it. In the case of Optimus prime it just made him grow in size. In the case of Hotrod He changed completely becoming Rodimus Prime

^ Fair point, except the Matrix of the movie is almost completely different from any pre-existing Matrix in any other TF media and had nothing to do with the bulk Optimus gained.

When Prime's standing on the aircraft carrier with Sam, he's ALREADY ditched all the extra bulk and returned completely to his normal size and configuration.
