Changed channel after first few minutes...

G'day,

I am 34, and as such a G1 Transformers fan. Still have a lot of my toys from the 80's.

I tried hard to RESIST watching the first Bay Transformers film, but gave in eventually, and whilst there was a lot I didn't like, overall it was at least tolerable.

This second film however I attempted to watch tonight on free-to-air TV here in Australia... and after a few minutes, I found something else to watch.

The final nail - seeing Optimus Prime, who I had grown up watching as being a very honourable leader, killing a Decepticon he had just hunted down.

No thank-you, Mr Bay.

Optimus mowed down Decepticons throughout the G1 cartoon and movie and even the comics where he was far more noble, even to a fault.

Hell, take a look at THE VERY FIRST THING Orion Pax does once he's rebuilt as Optimus Prime:

Four minutes into that video he straight-up SLAUGHTERS the Decepticons who were just soldiers following orders and causing tons of collateral damage, just like Demolishor at the beginning of TF:RotF. His "victim" there even used his last words to declare his intention to help subjugate humanity under a new ruler while staring down the barrel of a gun held by a guy who's motto is, "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings," ffs.

His treatment of war-mongering Decepticons is really quite consistent.

Try to relax and enjoy the movie next time. If you really know as much about the franchise as you think you do you'll find it's practically a lovesong to what came before and is very much in the spirit of its predecessors while including TONS of fun homages and references and reconceptualizations of elements of the original cartoons and comics.
