Chapter One; Forever & Always
"Flashback to when he said forever and always."
"Happy birthday, Taylor!" my best friend, Nicholas Jonas, shouted as he jumped on my bed.
"Nicky, what time is it?" I asked sleepily, rubbing my eyes.
"12:01 on your 6th birthday!!" Nick responded, as hyper as if he'd just drank 20 Diet Cokes. "Your mommy let me in to give you a surprise!" He handed me a small parcel wrapped in Comics from the newspaper.
"Thanks, Nicky!" I was becoming anxious myself. I speedily tore through the funny wrapping paper while Nick sat at the foot of my twin bed, shaking with pure excitement.
The present was even better that I had imagined. It was a delicate gold picture frame, and inside it was a picture of Nicholas and me at Disney World on vacation (both of our families went together every January). We were wearing huge marshmallow jackets and hugging to keep warm; you could see thick smoke rising from our shivering mouths. The image of our rosy childlike faces (being 5 years old seemed so long ago) and beaming smiles, along with all the memories of that superfun week rushing back to me, were enough to render me speechless.
"Oh, Nicky, I love it!" I yelled and leaned in to hug my first and only best friend.
"I promise that we'll always be best friends! Even when we're 100 years old!" Nicholas reassured me while we hugged tightly, as if he had read my fragile, 6 year old mind. I pulled back from the hug.
"Pinky promise?" I asked, still unsure. I held out my tiny pinky.
"Pinky promise!" Nicholas hooked his pinky with mine.

"Truth or dare?" Joseph asked me. His eyes sparkled as if he were planning something mischievous.
Because I was never one to pass on a dare, I replied coolly, "Dare!"
"Alright, Lacey..." Joseph paused for dramatic effect, "I dare you to kiss me, on the lips!"
"Eww!!!" I gasped. It was my instinct reaction. Joseph's grin became smug. I searched around the Jonas/Bryan tree house for a way out, but nobody was in the tree house but Joseph and me.
"Joseph, do I have to?" I whined.
"Yes, unless you want to chicken out..." Joe started flapping his wings like a chicken.
"No way," I hollered. "I'm seven years old- I'm a big girl! I'm not chickening out!" And with that, I leaned in and pressed my lips to Joseph's.
"Whoa," we both whispered to the silence after we pulled back.

"I'll race ya!" Kevin yelled and began swimming as fast as he could to the other side of his backyard pool. I swam after him, even though I knew he'd win. He always won swim races.
Suddenly, Kevin stopped in the middle of the pool. I caught up to him and, at first, thought he was drowning. Then, I realized he was just swimming really slowly. I continued to the other side, and eventually he made it too.
"What happened back there, Kev?" I asked curiously.
"I, uh, had a cramp in my foot..." Kevin stammered. His ten year old face blushed and he tried to change the subject. I was clueless at that moment, but later that night, a strange thought occurred to me...
Did Kevin let me win?

One month after Taylor's 7th birthday, it was moving day for the Bryans. They were moving from Wyckoff to Gatlinburg, Tennessee because of Mr. Bryan's job.
"I am going to miss you so much!!" Nicky hugged Taylor's neck.
"Me too!" She tried her hardest not to start crying those fat, wet tears building up behind her eyes.
"Always remember our promise!" Nicholas whispered, hugging Taylor even closer.
"I will." And the first burning, dripping tear rolled down Taylor's cheek.
"I'll call you on the phone tonight!" Joseph promised as he pulled Lacey into a bear hug.
"I'll be waiting," Lacey buried her face in Joseph's shoulder.
"Goodbye, Lacey," Joe whispered.
"Bye, Joseph," Lacey uttered, her voice breaking like her heart.
"We'll keep in touch, right?" Brittany asked her best friend, Kevin.
"Always!" He guaranteed her, pulling her into the last hug they'd share for eight years.
