Was just thinking how much this parallels real life but instead of Birding, it's comedy. Steve Martin retiring a few times, Jack Black a student, Owen Wilson a cocky talented one with trouble figuring his life out. Maybe there is more to it?

As you probably already know, the film is based on a true story, but very loosely. The characteristics you described aren’t true of the actual people about whom the book, The Big Year, was written. Those characterizations were created just for the film, and were probably written on purpose to fit the actors, either their real lives or the way they are typically typecast.
Neat idea about their careers as comedians.
