So with all the bird watching, they went to many places to add to all the birds they are looking for, but didn't mention going to any regular zoos. Is that off limits for the competition, or is it just assumed that because it's so common that the filmmaker decided to not worry about mentioning it? Thanks.

Yes, it is off-limits, the bird must be seen in the wild and unrestrained. This is a "rule" for birders generally, you don't put it on your life list unless it is seen in the wild (some will include heard, some will only count the sighting if it was photographed too).
