is there really a record?
just wondering if there really are bird enthusiasts who do The Big Year, and if so, what's the official record?
Should you stay for the credits? Check www.mediastinger.com!

Yeah, there's a record, there are all kinds of records. A birder can do a national or local "big year", but my local organization makes a much bigger deal about life lists. Have you seen 300 birds in the geographical area? If you have, you get your name on The List!
As has been noted before, getting big numbers is a function of how much time and money you have to devote to your hobby. Most of the people in the local "300 Club" are well-to-do retirees.
If we're going to die, let's die looking like a Peruvian folk band!
