Competition for Bostic

Something has occured to me. Bostic seems to have had a sense that both Martin's and Black's characters were on a Big Year. This seems to be because he saw Martin's character at the house where the hummingbird was found. He seems to focus on them and no one else, despite several characters repeatedly occuring at different hotspots. The two doctors show up at High Island, Texas, on the pelagic trip, and later Attu Island. Ellie also shows up on several occations. Even the bird-blogger Crane could be a potential competitor for his title, yet he barely notices them.
My thoughts are if he sees competitors everywhere, his character goes from being obsessed to being paraniod. Having re-occuring back-ground characters would cut down on production costs. Also, this focuses the attention on the competition between the three main characrters.

"Six trips? Sounds to me like somebody doing a Big Year."
"Maybe I just love to watch birds."
