In all fairness, "best comedy" doesn't necessarily mean "funniest comedy." I, for one, rated this movie 10 out of 10. How funny was it? Maybe 6 out of 10. Funnier than the average movie. Maybe not for a comedy. Chuckles throughout, but not a lot of big laughs at all. That's my take. But there can be other things about a comedy that make it great. Groundhog Day was always one of my favorite films, and I always considered that a comedy. However, like The Big Year, it's not exactly Bridesmaids when it comes to belly laughs. But it becomes great through other channels.
Maybe that's splitting hairs, but how good a movie is and how funny it is don't always have to align perfectly, even for comedies. The Big Year isn't huge laughs like Bridesmaids, and not ultra-unique like Groundhog Day, but it is still lovely in its own way, and I love that way (apparently).
I agree that marketing campaigns can sabotage expectations, but that's not the film's fault at all.
