Why do some people think this was supposed to be a comedy?

It looked like a classic comedy-drama to me from the previews, being more drama than comedy, i thought it was a very poetic film, and the scenes with Jack Black's character and his dad.. moving, great scenes.

I agree with you, i saw the trailer and i knew what kind of movie this was. But well the poster makes it look like another thing.

Also we know what we understand as comedy this days but actually a comedy can be something that takes things just in a lighter tone not something that makes you laugh.

reply

Well, mainly because the three leads are mainly comedic actors, so I guess it could have misled some people. But I think the movie was very sweet. I was expecting to laugh a bit more when I started watching it, but after a moment I didn't really care so much.

reply

Sweet is the best description, rather than funny.

It's an interesting movie and offers a simple moral.

Because was produced and promoted as a comedy. It is clearly listed on the imdb page as 'GENRE: COMEDY'... Wtf is wrong with you people. Do you read sh** before typing?? This movie missed it's mark BIG TIME and is only a 'drama' to bird lovers who flocked (haha.. bird puns) to this movie and try to play it off like it's suppose to have some beautiful hidden meaning. Yeah, if I watched the Garfield movie like 57 times in a row, then I probably would think he is the second coming of Christ.. So people, please stop trying to tell me to watch a movie that I didn't enjoy over again just because we don't agree.. Also, stop telling me 'you just don't get it then' also.. I understood Inception the very first time I watched it (EVERYTHING about it), so I think I catch on if I am watching something deep without having to force myself to enjoy something. But I'm not hating on this movie. I'm hating on all the post on this message board who are trying to justify why I should like this movie.. But back on topic.. Cmon.. Steve Martin and Jack black are in it and you're telling me that this wasn't supposed to be a comedy?? Those idiots must have put their own movie with the wrong genre then.. Pftt..

reply

People who think genre labels are the be-all-and-end-all are people so lacking in imagination that they must be told what to think before they can make their own observations.

You don't have to like it… but just don't let categories rule your life… Ever heard of comedians diversifying and trying other things?

i didn't see the trailer and the dvd cover actually had a film review quote calling it one of the best comedies of the year. so one would expect some laughs from one of the best comedies of any year. just my opinion. but this was not very funny at all. i liked it though, it was an interesting and sweet look into the whole birding thing, which i knew nothing about. it had a good story arc too with all three lead characters.

In all fairness, "best comedy" doesn't necessarily mean "funniest comedy." I, for one, rated this movie 10 out of 10. How funny was it? Maybe 6 out of 10. Funnier than the average movie. Maybe not for a comedy. Chuckles throughout, but not a lot of big laughs at all. That's my take. But there can be other things about a comedy that make it great. Groundhog Day was always one of my favorite films, and I always considered that a comedy. However, like The Big Year, it's not exactly Bridesmaids when it comes to belly laughs. But it becomes great through other channels.

Maybe that's splitting hairs, but how good a movie is and how funny it is don't always have to align perfectly, even for comedies. The Big Year isn't huge laughs like Bridesmaids, and not ultra-unique like Groundhog Day, but it is still lovely in its own way, and I love that way (apparently).

I agree that marketing campaigns can sabotage expectations, but that's not the film's fault at all.

It is a comedy. Read the definition.

reply

It's not a comedy, it's a comedy drama, research the difference.
