Entirely his decision. He chose his destiny. Too bad, but it's kind of hard to feel sorry for the guy. It's not like his wife up and left. He had a million warnings and blew right through them all. If he'd had a million more, he'd have blown through those too. He left his wife, not the other way around.

shareGood talk.
sharebollocks! he deserves to be all alone. it would never be enough! he would have to keep going for 8, 9, 10 more big years if anyone else was a threat to his precious birding record. what kind of a doormat woman would put up with that while pregnant? probably the same type of woman who would stay with a guy while he smacks her around.
Larry Gaylord: "a billion come in on a day off,and they don't flip out!"
It wasn't that I felt sorry for him...I just didn't blame him and didn't feel sorry for her. He was obviously a die-hard birder...had apparently divorced twice before this BECAUSE of his birding. I assumed she knew that before they married. What'd she expect?
What do we expect in some hypothetical future between Ellie and Brad? He obviously has the potential to go to go for it again...and again...and again. Is Ellie gonna be happy...like Stu's wife? Or is she gonna end up frustrated that just when she needs him, he's off to Attu for the umpteenth time. Hopefully SHE will remember that SHE made the decision to be with a birder and not run off when he does what she knows he'd gonna do.
The situation between Kenny and Jessica made me feel bad...but I didn't feel that he'd done anything wrong given the situation and background.
my god its full of stars
There will never be another big year like the one depicted in this film. Their numbers were that high only because of El Nino, which brought a lot of rarities into the ABA area (rarities = species that don't breed in North America). Sure, there will be more El Nino years, but air travel has altered significantly since 9/11 and that makes it a lot harder to do what those guys did.
But even more significant, birders can't fly to Attu anymore.
he didn't lose his wife.
He let her go so that he could look at birds. He Could have saved his marriage.
But he didn't even try.
I got the vibe that Kenny regretted some of what happened, but he seemed to satisfied with his decision and to further his birding interests in China. In fact I'd argue that China was an epiphany for him because he wasn't just doing it to "win" at something or maintain a record. China was a new start to re kindle his interest in actual birds.
I don't feel sorry for people who make mistakes or have regrets, just people who don't change after they've done them.
I think it's sad in that he was expected to lower his passion for birding at the expense of someone who already knew he had that passion. She didn't want to go with him during any of it? I don't really think either of them made a lot of effort, they both wanted different things and fell prey to illusion they needed to be married, have a nice house, and have kids.
I did feel bad for him for ending up on his own and having to contemplate that.
