Its been along time (early 90's) Since I read these books but....

I dont remember any references in the books about this taking place on earth in a alternate timeline or far into the future. I keep seeing references in the tv show about this being earth in the far future like the space needle collapsed and old decrepit satellite dishes. Is that a liberty that the TV show is just taking with the source material?

It's from the source material. It's hinted all along (though never quite as blatantly) and finally made clear in the Jerle of Shannara trilogy, if I remember correctly. Some of the later books even take place in modern times. The show took liberties with the landscape, though.

Terry Brooks decided several books into the Shannara series that it all took place on a future Earth. That's why the references are "subtle" ... they are non-existent.

Due to the lack of moderators, trolls can ruin the IMDB message boards. Don't feed them.

I only read the first three so if there were any subtle hints in them I must have missed them.

There are only a couple subtle hints, from Sword of Shannara and in all the books. Allanon tells the story of the Great Wars of science (technology) and how the different races were established from it (except the Elves who were always there).

Shea Ohmsford sees a bit of ruins with a hard stone-like foundation (concrete), for instance.

But the way the show portrayed it is ludicrous!

They are there if you keep your eyes open. King Of The Silver River having a flashlight for example.

I never got the impression years ago when I read the books, that it had anything to do with Earth.

Terry Brooks wrote another series called The Word and The Void which took place in modern time then linked the story together with Armageddon Children

In some of the later books a robot factory is an important location and later they even fight an AI.

Antrax. One of my favorites.
