Why did Sexby change sides at Edgehill?
I missed why he decided to fight for Parliament, was it because the Royalist was such a rubbish commander? And also why was he sent to stay with them in the first place?

shareHe had a dispute with Angelica Fanshawe's first husband- I can't remember his name- which involved holding a knife to his throat. He probably couldn't have continued fighting for the royalists even if he wanted to.
shareBut he pulled the sword on the husband because he was threatening him with a gun, wasn’t he, because he saw him changing the coloured ribbon he was wearing?
shareYes, but that would still be in Harry (husband)'s favour of who did what, and Sexby would be put up for treason to raise that sword and gun at Harry. So, he had to change sides or he'd be dead meat.

That`s right. Also, sexby didn`t give a toss when he saw honest John getting whipped in public. And when he met the parliamentarians he didn`t seem at all impressed by them. I have really enjoyed this show though; channel 4 should definitely make more costume dramas.

Not quite right. Fanshawe threatened Sexby because he saw that Sexby was wearing one of Angelica's garters from her wedding night around his arm and as a result Fanshawe grew angry with Sexby (no doubt believing Angelica to be unfaithful) and demanded its return and to know from where he obtained the garter. That is what led to the confrontation, it was only after that that Sexby is shown changing sides by swapping his colours.
Exactly. Angelica's husband freaked out on him because he was wearing Angelica garter. Sexby pulled a knife on the husband, and only after that did he switch sides. Obviously, he couldn't keep fighting under the guy who thinks he is banging the wife, and who he pulled a knife on. He switched sides to get away from Angelica's husband. He was a mercenary character who didn't really care whose side he was fighting on at that point.
shareSounds like a chicken or the egg quandary.
