Those accelerator suits are the most ridiculous thing

Just caught this on TV. I had forgotten just how laughably stupid those accelerator suits were. So overblown and flat out stupid to the degree that it takes me right out of an already ridiculous movie. Suits that can take any sort of punishment, allow the person inside them to be run over and survive giant falls, giving them Superman powers, giving them speed powers like The Flash, making them impervious...and after all that nonsense, the only thing broken is a faceplate. It was just so overblown and silly. It's bad enough that cars and other vehicles are flying and flipping all over the place with no thought to even an iota of physics, but the suits are even worse.

Oh wait, they can stick a machine in a dead guys head and turn his last memories from before death into images! There is something more stupid than accelerator suits after all!

I remember when this movie came on channel USA, I had to watch it because I heard the movie was really bad. I could not understand why they went all out with the Accelerator suit, this movie as a whole was focusing on technology a lot. I think that's the problem, because of the use of technology in this film it became overuse to the point where they weren't playing it safe. I have seen the cartoon before, but they should have went into the direction sort of like with The Expendables. Don't use technology too much, focus on the action. Like with the old Bond movies for example. I hope the second one is better because I could not believe that scene with the accelerator suits, it was just horrible to watch.

I knew when I saw the trailer for the movie and the accelerator suits showed up that the movie was going to be bad. I watched to movie on a bootleg my brother had. It was horrible.

There was always an element of silliness to the cartoon, but the movie should have tried to be a little more serious. The suits didn't even save anyone or stop the missile. They only caused more destruction. It was a total waste.

reply

The most useless aspect of this whole movie, it only contributes to unnecessary destruction and makes the Joes look like fools. Why would they really need it anyway when all of them are capable of doing death defying leaps and bounds anyway? It also creates a distraction to the public and ruins the purpose of being a "secret" organization. Not a very wise decision from the writers.

My ignore list is very, very, very long...

You and I both know that film makers no longer care about story. It's all about action and CGI, ergo, I can fully understand the decision to run with this dumb idea. They used it for the marketing, and it worked well enough. It got folks to go see it, which is all they cared about. But yes, it was a really bad idea that added nothing to the story. And they were just flat out stupid and totally unbelievable.

First off you have to remember that this is a movie loosely based on a cartoon that showcased outrageous technology like jet packs and laser rifles, and being a fan of that cartoon I was expecting some crazy tech to show up. Secondly movies like this should never be taken that serious, they are just fun "popcorn" flicks that you just shut your brain off and enjoy.

With that being said, I guess I'm one of the only ones that liked the accelerator suits. A lot of people seem to complain when a movie shows a normal human doing super-human feats for no apparent reason, so to me the suits served as a reason/excuse for them to do that kind of stuff. Plus it was just really cool to watch them do that stuff.

PS Those suits came nowhere near close to "Superman powers" or "speed powers like The Flash" in my opinion, they just enhanced their abilities. No I'm not saying that they were superhuman outside of those suits, but I would like to think that being highly trained military soldiers means that they are SOMEWHAT stronger and faster than your average person.

The funny thing is the military is developing something like the suit. It already has a prototype exo-suit that enhances the strength of the wearer. So being that this film is set "Sometime in the future" an "Iron Man-light" suit actually works fine.

I've even read some stuff about exo-suits built for people who have lost the use of their legs and/or arms. I honestly didn't know about the military exo-suits but I'm not surprised, I heard there is quit a couple of devices and technology that we have or use that started out as military prototypes.

Stop trying to critique everything and change the mind of people who liked the movie. Rise of Cobra was supposed to be mindless action with a lot of high-tech weapons and beyond belief special FX and sequences. If you came into it not expecting that and got disappointed then you are a massive tool box who should just not give their opinion on any film ever again.

reply

The OP didn't say he wanted to change the mindsets of anybody who liked the film though, and he does realize it's meant to be a popcorn movie, he just shared his thoughts on something he thought was completely stupid. And let's be a little honest, those suits were really an excuse for more destruction and made the Joes look like ignorant fools. Like I said before earlier in this thread, why bother using the suits when the other Joes seem perfectly capable of handling this kind of thing without causing that much of a ruckus?

I've got an ignore list longer than a Chinese phone book.

Stop trying to critique everything and change the mind of people who liked the movie. >>> Idiot much? If that is an attempt to change your mind, then your love of this movie is pretty damned fragile to begin with. Take your hypersensitivity and display it to someone who cares, because it sure as hell isn't me. I am laughing at how thin-skinned and ignorant you are.

I really liked the movie, but I agree they went a bit overboard with the tech, at least the Joes' tech. Cobra/M.A.R.S. I can understand having futuristic tech, considering that is how Destro makes his living, but the Joe team should only bejust at the threshold of next gen tech, where science fiction and science fact come together. The suits and brain probe were just a little to far into the realm of science fiction to be taken seriously.

reply

Maybe if they'd let the guys with the experiance of using them have a go, they might have stopped the missile and caught the badguys...

reply

While I agree the suits have their fair share of problems, I liked their inclusion.

To be fair, when I first saw the trailer, I thought they made the movie look absurdly stupid. After watching it 4 years later, I would say they're one of the few standout positives in the film.

I actually thought they were about as poorly-designed and unnecessary as the machines in Pacific Rim, but in both instances, they allowed for scenes of destruction I will likely never witness in my day to day life, which I liked.

Didn't matter about the accelerator suits.. That Korean, still out ran Marlon Wayans without one..

Which makes the suits pretty much useless...
