John Fielding's headband

Why does John Fielding wear a black band around his forehead? I thought maybe it was so that people would know he is blind when he isn't wearing his dark glasses, but sometimes he wears it with the glasses. I think it is historically accurate, as I am sure I have seen a blind man in one of Hogarth's paintings wearing one.

I believe it was just a common indicator that the wearer was blind, a sort of precursor to today's white stick. Not all blind men would have been able to afford those darkened glasses John Fielding wears, so I assume that the black band was much more common.

You are correct. John Fielding wears his headband so that people would know that he is blind. This is historically accurate.

I considered that it might be to remove pressure from above the eyes.
