Episode 4...bastards!

I really liked episode 4, but wow it really made me dislike the Fielding brothers. I understand how at the time that's how people thought, but the way Henry spoke to Tom Jones when he was shackled up, and poor Tom's face when he found out what was going to happen to his brother. I think the writers did well contrasting the two sets of brothers, and how financial/social positions had completely blinded (no pun intended) the Fielding brothers to just how similar the Jones brothers were to them.

I thought it was very clever how the producers didn't just have Tom Jones as a faceless 'bad guy'. He may have been a criminal, a thief, murderer and a rapist, but he also had compassion for Henry Fielding's gout and he was clearly educated and thoughtful. I agree that under different circumstances the Jones brothers and the Fielding brothers could have been in the other's position.

If John Fielding had been born poor his blindness would likely have left begging as his only option for survival, whatever his mental capacity.

I prefer Imaginality to reality.
