Better than Thor: Dark World

This was better than THAT piece of garbage. Hercules was played straight, and respected the subject matter, and didn't sink into bad, slapstick comedy every 2 minutes like Dark World. It's a real fantasy film that takes itself seriously. I appreciated the serious tone, and the cinematography, costumes, and score were all gorgeous, as was the cast. The animosity between the two brothers was handled well, and the romance between Hercules and Hebe was really beautiful. Finally a film that isn't loaded with stupid one-liners and special effects and monsters. I really believe audiences have changed a lot in the last 10 or so years. It's sad that so few people can appreciate on old school fantasy movie like this anymore.

I'm afraid i just can't concur with you on that. Now as we've all witnessed that MARVEL has much outcome each year with spectacular story line mostly adapted from comics. Its unwise of you to bring forth Thor 2 The Dark World into comparison with turd fest historical epic(which could be inaccurate). CGI in Thor 2 was just spectacular than this. Honestly speaking, the lead actor Kellan Lutz did a terrible job as Hercules. Hopefully, there's another flick "Hercules" by Dwayne Johnson which is set to release this year. And this movie was boring as hell! There wasn't a speck of blood found anywhere. I still prefer 300 & 300 Rise Of An Empire as intriguing epics....

I havent seen this Hercules movie yet, but thor 2 was boring and childish, the cgi was good, but that was all you get. 300 was ok but corny and unrealistic, and the 300 #2 was just horrible.
So if you think it was intriguing epic, then hercules might be ok.

I have to say I dont expect much from hercules, so many on here say it was so awful
that I have to see if it was really that bad.
I am amazed so many say it wasnt hercules story, but I dont know the true hercules story so I wonder how they do?

being like other movies is something they all do.

You obviously know nothing about ancient Greece or its' mythology. This was far from serious. This movie has nothing to do with the story of Heracles. The cartoon was more accurate and respectful, than this piece of camel dung.

What I mean was that it was done in a serious tone; they didn't throw in silly humor and dumb one-liners, but rather played it straight. I realize the film does not follow the Greek myths accurately at all. I'm only saying that it was a nice, entertaining movie that offered a dramatic, old fashioned story, along with some beautiful visuals and film score. The style reminded me of the kinds of fantasy films they made years ago, and i appreciated it for those qualities..

The problem is - it took itself too seriously, too dramatic. It is a pretty bad movie, which, had it been a B class, would have been more acceptable.

I must agree with you as well. This disappointment of a movie has very little (only a sprinkling possibly) of anything to do with the stories of Heracles. I don't hold out too much hope for the other film coming out this year with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, but even so, it looks like it is slightly closer than how this film was written. It felt like an entirely different character.

Even putting aside the erroneous details of the character, the movie itself failed in many ways especially given the high budget. As Beau says, had it been produced and marketed as a B-movie or maybe for the SciFi channel or something, then it would have been at least understandable. There are just so many problems with this film: a silly, rushed story; repetitive and forgettable musical score; his mother looking younger than his love interest; casting the guy from "Spartacus" basically for credibility. The biggest flaw, however, is that it is ultimately boring, despite the frenetic pace, and gave me little reason to get too invested in any of the characters in a meaningful way. This is saying something because it was the movie I chose to watch while donating platelets and being confined to a chair for 90 minutes, haha.

I know you think (OP) that it is more of a throwback or homage to the films of 20-30 years ago (or more) though I'm not quite sure. I grew up watching tapes of stuff like "Sinbad", "Clash of the Titans" and other 80s sword & sorcery stuff (ie: Conan) and while these movies were not perfect, they had incredible charm and were entertaining. Even with constrained visual effects of the time, I can still remember certain scenes and musical cues decades later. I'm not that sure I'll even remember anything about this film a year or so from now.

Lastly, I'm certainly not a Marvel fanboy by any means; "Thor: The Dark World" was an underbaked, poorly written film and was easily the poorest of all the new Marvel "reboot" character films. However, to compare this movie even to T:TDW isn't really fair for this film. The acting talent involved in "Thor" is vastly superior as well as the CGI. The only thing really comparable, in my opinion, is the quality of both scripts.

This stuff is only my opinion as well and I respect the fact you enjoyed this movie for playing it straight. I respect a non-conventional movie, but this one just wasn't my cup of tea. Glad some found it enjoyable though.

Thor had its flaws, but, at least it was fun

So your knowledge of hercules is from a cartoon?? LOL

Of course not. I've read a lot of Greek mythology when I was a kid (some of it stuck, too ).

The thing is, Heracles is an anti-hero, big, brute, but a tortured soul. You don't see it here. This has more in common with the movies about Moses than the Greek myth.

And you should definitely see the Disney. I liked it.
