And the relationship between Beyonce's character and the Jewish guy wasn't developed at all, at least not enough to warrant so much crying at the end. Blotchy writing. Holes in script. Plus I knew most of what would happen before it happened and I really didn't care. Just my opinion.

The relationship wasn't developed because there probably wasn't one to that magnitude in the film. The director's commentary says, it was just speculation and added sensationalism and there was just a mutual respect and love between the characters in real life. It's never been confirmed that there was an actual relationship so Ms Martin just threw those scenes in to represent Chess' love of black music with Beyonce, "herself" representing the blues.
Not the greatest script but still an entertaining movie.
