Rivalry b/Muddy and Wolf?
I sensed animosity between Howlin Wolf and Muddy. Anyone else pick up on this or know why?

shareI don't know how accurate that is. Martin didn't elaborate on it on her commentary but there was evidence in the way they lived their lives that Wolf considered Muddy more of a slave because he was so loyal to Chess and took his payment in cadillacs. He obviously wasn't shy about voicing his opinion about how Chess was compensating his artists and how Muddy was a pawn. Also the issue of Muddy trying to steal guitarist Hubert Sumlin was supposedly true according to the director. During the recording session, the older guitarist sitting next to Hubert is the real Hubert Sumlin.
shareThis is a selection from the liner notes included in my copy of Howlin' Wolf's Chicago Blue album from Tomato Records....
"It was none other than the Wolf's soon-to-be-enemy, Muddy Waters, who arranged Wolf's first gig in Chicago and introduced him around in the clubs. Wolf took his help, and when he got big himself, disdained his friendship. Muddy, who was the biggest of the big in Chicago in those days, never seemed to understand why. 'I never quit trying to be his friend,' he once said. It was Wolf's distrust kicking in, the bitter anxiety which told him if Muddy appeared someplace, it only meant that the Wolf couldn't; so that each progression of Muddy's was seen as a direct assault on Wolf's own economy and was duly resented." - Kent Cooper
Maybe that clears things up a little.

The great Hubert Sumlin recently passed, as did Etta James, only 3 days ago.
