Why would Beyonce release her new cd and prioritize promoting that over the movie? There was no talk show circuit promotion of the film from anyone. I recently saw a rerun of her on Oprah and all she talks about is "Sasha Fierce." No mention of Cadillac at all. Unless I missed something, it's not a smart business move to have both out at the same time and have little to no promo effort for the movie.
Beyone is the "Executive Producer" of the film. With that, I would think she would want to spend some time promoting it since her name is largely attached to it and she's pressed to make a successful transition into a viable film actress. It's called taking responsibility for your career and success.
Although Beyonce did "mention" the movie, there was not real promotion. A real promotion would have included other guests like Adrian Brody, Jeffrey Wright, Columbus Short, and Gabrielle Union.
Beyonce did do some press junkets for the movie. She sung to Etta James at Fashion Rocks. She mentioned the movie on Oprah, Tyra and Ellen. She was scheduled to do Charlie Rose, but her segment was canceled when the terrorist attack happened at the hotel in the Middle East. I really blame the studio. I didn't see one commercial for the movie after it was released. It should've been commercials showing the glowing reviews that the movie got from a lot of critics. Also, movie sites like Fandango and Yahoo audiences gave it very high scores. They could've used that in a commercial as well. Saying that critics and moviegoers were impressed by the movie.
There was a reviewer who thought the movie was Oscar caliber, and he said that the studio didn't enter the movie into any festivals to help build buzz for it. The screen per average was good for it's first week. If Sony would've push the promotion just a little more, it could've helped. What I'm hoping is that the studio sends the dvd to Academy voters and also does some "For Your Consideration" ads. If the movie gets some surprise Oscar nominations, that would help the box office. The movie only cost $12 million dollars, even though it looks a lot more expensive, so the studio doesn't have much to gamble at all.
I applaud Beyonce for helping to produce the movie and giving black actors/actresses and a black director a chance to do a theatrical release that told this story of blues legends. She didn't do it as a vanity piece, either, she clearly said in interviews she didn't come in until the last third of the movie and that she was even doubtful of taking the role until her mother encouraged her.
Beyonce is not only extremely talented, but she has a tremendous work ethic and commitment to her projects, so I can't do anything but appreciate what she did here.
I actually did see commercials a few times. What I didn't see was any promtion / interviews with Adrien Brody or Jeffrey Wright. They're the two leads and not one interview. There seems to have been little to no marketing budget for the film and the little there was got spent on commercials. Surely they could have hired a publicist to get Brody and Wright on some talks shows.
