Mudd offered Hubert(the guitarist)more money to play for his band in an effort to get back at Wolf for taking his groupie. Since it was more money, Hubert took the offer not realizing that Mudd's shows were more untamed and raunchy than Wolf's. Its evident in Hubert's reaction when the band member's girlfriend approaches Hubert looking for her boyfriend and then the two (the band member and his girlfriend) start to argue in the middle of their performance. I think Hubert was suppose to be a timid guy and once he realized how wild and out of control Mudd's shows were it made him uncomfortable. Meanwhile Wolf is in the audience fuming because Mudd has stolen his guitarist. The guy with the gun was a religious fanatic who felt that the blues was the "devils music". Also in an earlier scene he mentions that his daughters had run off with blues singers so he had a strong disliking or hatred for musicians. It was just by coincidence that he showed up that night with a gun. After the guy points the gun at the stage everybody gets out of the way except Hubert, who is then saved by Wolf. Hubert, who was already nervous had had enough and decided to go back and play in Wolf's band.
