why was the baby so important?

that is the one thing that ruined the movie for me...no explanation as to why this particular baby was so important? or did i miss something

I assume it was the "second coming" and was going to save mankind.

God didn't want to save Jesus 2 because he didn't have faith in humanity, so he sent angels to kill him. The angel saved the baby and now God changed his mind and will let him live.

This is funny, because I was thinking almost the same thing as I watched this crap. Except I thought the baby actually WAS John Connor.
