I've only seen the 1977 version
Is this......... sorta similar or some kind of prequel/sequel ?

This newer one is a remake. It takes the basic story but adds a lot of backs story, and it's more of a homage if anything.
It uses the cold War and the end of the second world war a lot, with the film apparently being about guilt.
I wasn't that keen. It has some interesting ideas and does some good visual things but I felt like it was far too long.
The original is probably my favorite horror film. It's a visual nightmare and uses atmosphere more than anything. The plot is very simple in the original with the visuals taking centre stage and I just felt they added too much in the remake and took away the beautiful simplicity it had.
It's not your usual stereotypical Hollywood remake though so it is worth a watch
