Natalie Portman?

This months issue of Empire says that she has been cast, maybe we'll actually get a decent remake and not just some low budget rush job thats cashing in on the original.

reply

Supposedly she's currently in negotiations to star as Suzie Banyon, and I believe they have a director in mind, but that's only a rumor.

if this is directed by david gordon green, it will surely kick serious ass. dgg is one of the most talented young filmmakers around, with a visual style that evokes a young malick and quirky characters that are relatable on a very human level.

Thats a good sign Portman is cast. Imagine Paris Hilton in the role?

question - Natalie Portman?

answer - who cares?

it's just another remake.

I'd love to see natalie do a horror film like this. The original was good, but hopefully with the remake, we get a little more into the evil of the teachers, I felt it was like "bam, they're evil!" lol. GO NAT!!!

Scientists are saying the future is going to be far more futuristic than they originally predicted.

u sure you're a fan? coz you want Nay in a remake of a good film...this doesn't make a lot of sense.

how about we just remake Braindead and Evil Dead for all those 15 year olds?

reply

Let's be honest; artfully, the original was fantastic, but Argento's films in general have serious deficiencies in plot, story, and character development. I'm an advocate for originals, I always have been: however, if the film is going to be made regardless of public protest, let's look at the glass half full. There's a chance, not a great one, but a chance the remake will expand on the story. They can't exactly muck up the artful cinematography because when you think of Suspiria that's exactly what comes to mind. They don't exactly have a movie without it. I think this might be the first remake where we could see potential improvement.

The plot is weak in the original.

However, Suspiria still remains one of my all time favorite horror films.

Maybe if they remake it, they can explain exactly why the witches decided a dance school was a good place to hide out in...that never made sense to me.

Also, maybe they can explain the witches main motivation...they never really touched on that in the original.

reply

Exactly! I think there's some room for improvement, provided things are done correctly.

remake PHENOMENA and cover portman with real maggotts!!!!!!!
and only make it ten minutes long, and call it natalie and the maggotts not phenomena. id pay to see that yup!

"Also, maybe they can explain the witches main motivation...they never really touched on that in the original."

Watch the next two movies in the series (Inferno and Mother of Tears) for more clarity on their motivation.

It would have been a more bold move to actually attempt what Argento wanted to do originally: cast young adolescent actresses as schoolgirls. I think it would be an interesting twist.

reply

The casting of Natalie Portman intrigues me and makes me think that it won't be so bad but overall, a remake is just unnecessary. Who cares if the original plot was weak? The majority of Argento's movies suffer from a weak plot, but his scripts aren't the reason why his movies are successful. I'd have thought his success was due to his direction and style.

I also believe that if the remake attempts to make more sense of the plot by explaining things in detail, then it's going to take away the surreal quality of the original.

It reminds me of the prequel for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It attempted to explain more about Leatherface and his family and in doing so, it took away the horror of the original. The same can be said of the abomination that was the Black Christmas remake. What was more chilling? The original with the killer, his background and motives never explained or the sloppy remake and it's unebelievable and predictable killer?

Sometimes I wish that Hollywood would let things be and try and be more original. To think that there are thousands of scripts out there by first time writers and producers would rather risk their money on a remake that is more than likely to flop.

hmmmm.... i hafta agree i'm not super-thrilled about a remake of this movie, mainly various elements (color, scenery, story, acting, intensity, score) were utilized that made up such a great work of art in horror cinema. i don't believe such attention to detail will be paid to this remake (if anything, hopefully they'll keep the soundtrack the way it is--no over-the-top choirs "aahhhhhhh-ing").

in regards to natalie portman for the role, i could easily see her playing the role of "Olga" easily, but not suzy. natalie has, by no means, a sophisticated style nor behavior for such a role. hmmm... if they DID use paris hilton (LOL) i would hope she would play "Pat" (if you've seen the original, you'll know why). but for the role of "Suzy Bannion," i think the actress would have to be someone who could pass as a sophisticate (remember this is a school of ballet-at least i hope it stays ballet). i would think Scarlett Johansson or Liv Tyler. i think they would work well with hair-dyed in an overcast atmosphere like that.

i still kinda wish, since they are remaking it, they would go with dario's original idea: instead of using teenagers, use children as it was originally intended. i think that would be way better, but that's just my opinion and my two cents on the matter.

Now first off I'm one of the biggest fans of the original, but I see a lot of room for improvement.

The original plot didn't make any sense, was a little too slow paced, and really looks dated now. Those type movies don't make for a good franchise. I can see Suspiria as the new action franchise if they do it right.

The original plot needs a lot of work if they want this movie to make any money. They should change it from a girls ballet school to a guys UFC school. This would serve two purposes. First, the action scenes would be way better. Instead of a one sided killing, there would be more of a battle, like real fights. Second UFC fighting is hot right now. The teachers could turn out to be triad members who are fixing fights and killing the students who lose the fights.

As far as casting, I'd like to see Jason Stratham in the lead role. They should introduce a side-kick as well to play his brother. Someone funny for comedic relief. Jack Black would be my choice. Natalie Portman could play a reporter who is covering the murders for the local newspaper and also Stratham's love interest. Jet Li could play the head teacher.

The head teacher would kidnap the reporter and escape to the triad hideout. Stratham and Black would chase him down, fight off the triads, and save the girl.

Okay I'm not out here saying that I know famous people or anything, I just love the original film and have a vague and weak six-degree-of-seperation-link to Natalie Portman.
A good friend of mine, his little sister somehow ended up going to school with Natalie Portman way back in the day. They are good friends and occasionally get together. I had asked my friends' sister to ask Natalie about the Suspiria remake, and here's what she said on 3/31/09:
"She was impressed people even knew about it. Said she may be doing another ballet/horror film. But as far as she is concerned, she's passing on the remake."
So for what it's worth, there's my "red hot" scoop for this one.

That other ballet/horror film would be Darren Aranofsky's Black Swan, in which she would win an Oscar for her role in that film. Suspiria would have been neat to see.
But I think this project is going to be shut down eventually...
