The ending.....

I only saw the series..I did not read the book.. I am vague on her actual role in the killing of Nancy.. Can someone clear it up for me.? I loved the show. It was beautiful in all the performances. The scenery, the story telling.. But at the end, when she was hypnotized, it went off track.. especially because she knew Jeremiah and I wasnt sure if they were both in on the actual session. I am open to all ideas.

SPOILER ALERT....SPOILER ALERT.....SPOILER ALERT....SPOILER ALERT.

I binge watched the six part series two days ago. I loved it . WHAT FOLLOWS IS MY UNDERSTANDING OF EVENTS.

Mary's death was a severe , mental blow to Grace. Grace was just unable to process the horrible death/fate of her dear friend, special due to the horrible circumstamces. Mary believed the rich son's love was sincere like hers for him...but the ring and promise of marriage were just lies and ,after she got butchered by that doctor, she died horribly.

Grace was a very naive, sweet girl..if you recall ,after Mary's death Grace collapsed in the laundry and when she woke up the first time she thought she was Mary .Her friends held her down in her bed and then she lost consciousness again .The following day ,when she woke up , she was her normal self again.

All the pain , resentment and injustice that Mary had gone through/ suffered didn't die with Mary but continued to live/manifest in the second personality that Grace's mind created.

Grace didn't remember helping James choke Nancy in the cellar because it was her second personality "Mary" that took over and committed the crime with James.

During her stay at the estate in the country , Mary at times , without Grace realizing , took over ...for example when Grace realised that Nancy was pregnant she said that she deserved to die because socially speaking both Nancy and Mary were on the same level so it wouldn't be right if Mary died and Nancy got scott free.
That was not Grace talking but bitter "Mary",Grace's other personality .
Idem when Nancy told both of them that they were fired and had to leave the estate before the master got back ...Grace was angry and said she wanted Nancy dead.

I really felt sorry for the psychiatrist ..he fell in love with Grace but when "Mary" opened his eyes during the hypnosis session ,he couldn't accept the situation.

Hope my insight is helpful?

Yes thanks for your reply.. Its been a few months, so I am a bit foggy but you brought it all back. I think I got lost because the ending was so fast in the hypnosis session. I did hate that the good doc was ruined in the war. That was sad. I was hoping he would be her man in the end.
Loved the series..Netflix has some great originals. I just finished Bloodline, Anne with an E, Gypsy, and Ozark. Any suggestions for me? I loved the era of Alias Grace. Maybe something similar?

After a night's sleep it occurred to me that James was actually telling the truth when in his confession he said that Grace was also in on the murders and he repeats his accusations just as they are about to hang him.

After the the hypnosis session it's obvious that who schemed with him to kill Nancy was actually "Mary" Grace's second personality .
James died never knowing that he had interacted with " Mary" and not Grace .

As for the kindhearted doctor he got too involved with Grace , he fell in love and he was a mess when the truth unfolded ..he wasn't fit to go to war...he's luck he came back alive.

I had the opportunity to watch netflix last week ..I 'm not particularly interested in this era ..what intrigues me are stories about mental people, hence the choice to watch "Alias Grace"

I'm a sci. fic nerd and I love DRAMA .

So sorry, I can't really suggest you much in this era.

I binge watched the one season "Damnation " :set in the early 1930 the storyline is unusual and there are a lot of unexpected events .

The one season "The OA "..that's drama mixed with a touch of supenatural ... this has a very original take on an abduction.

Films I saw .. "Suite Francaise " and "Naked Among Wolves" both true based stories during the war ,both worth seeing .

Thanks for your suggestions : "Bloodline " and "Gypsy" sound my piece of cake...unfortuately I haven't got Netflix myself.

Yes I too love drama, with characters that are dark, or have mental issues, or dark past experiences that unfold. Maybe a friend can let you access their Netflix. Now on Hulu I watched the Handmaidens Tale, but it was so disturbing I am not sure you will like it. I will look into the films you mentioned and try to think of some drama ones for you. I dont watch sci fi much, but dramas are my thing. I saw Big Little Lies on HBO and that was excellent.
