I hated the father in law in this more than I have ever hated any character in a movie before. That guy was such an *beep* What are the characters that you guys have hated in a movie the most?

shareI think we were supposed to dislike the father in law but we were also supposed to see a father having to say goodbye to his little girl. Although he seemed to be a jerk before this the anger he shows is a natural part of grieving.
I think all the characters I initially disliked were somehow brought around, or atleast I understood them. With the exception of maybe Speer..
I guess I just hated how he blamed Clooney for what happened to his daughter. It was not his fault at all.
shareYeah but grief is not logical, and especially if they had a strained relationship before the accident it makes sense that the father would hold onto anything that would provide him that release of anger and frustration.
If the sun does shine or rain does fall I give thanks Ive had my sight to see through it all
The father-in-law was emotionally immature and a jerk. He had to delude himself to keep from seeing his daughter the way she really was. Matt King was going through hell and the father-in-law didn't offer an ounce of empathy. He doesn't care about anything but keeping the illusion of the good qualities of his daughter alive.
Most of the characters in the film reveal they have flaws including the father-in-law, who though he thought he knew his daughter and undoubtedly did love her, we find out he didn't really know her as much as he thinks.
And yes he does tend to apportion an inordinate amount of blame to Matt for the accident, but that's not rare when it comes to in-law relationships.

I think the wife was selfish and foolish. Of course you are not supposed to say that because she is in a coma!
The wife was raised to be be selfish and foolish -- what did Matt and Elizaeth ever have in common.
The Fat-in-law was a jerk but he was also losing his wife and daughter at the same time
I forget.
Was this her first affair or had she betrayed Matt before?
Remember part of the story is that he's been there but he hasn't been there.
Not saying there's ever a "pass" to go outside of marriage, but it is amazing how many happily married couples are not happily married.
And when everything is going well financially, even better because the wanted, absent spouse is working so hard, it's tricky to complain for Elizabeth...
Nothing's all black or white.
