As good as Sideways?

I love Sideways, one of my favorite movies. After a recent viewing, probably my 20th at least, I got curious about what the director had been working on since.

I just realized that he also directed The Descendants. From the trailer it also seems to be a character driven, chill movie.

For those that have seen both, does this stack up?

Does this have that same calm, subtle feel with great character growth/development?

I don't wanna take the time to write a long comparison essay; and I can see the similarities between the two movies, but I thought The Descendants was much better.

Check it out for yourself though

agree with the other commenter: i enjoyed Sideways but The Descendants is a better film, in my opinion.

I like both movies. They're both character-driven; the protagonists are both flawed (although Matt from Descendants is more flawed in the book); and they both are successful in the use of the surroundings as atmosphere. I felt like Alexander Payne did a great job adapting this book.

By the way, we visited with friends who live on Oahu just after filming but before release of the film and trailers, and they said everyone was super excited about the prospect of this film and very proud of its author. That's actually when I first heard about The Descendants.

I hope you finally watched it!

PS: Sorry about the grammatical error (...living on Oahu...). I can't edit with the app.
