I do not get the negative criticism I've read about this film so far

--and I mean that pretty literally. The negative criticism just hasn't made sense to me. I've read message board posts, user reviews here and professional reviews. It seems like folks are pretty much just listing facts about the film and saying that they're bad (or some equivalent).

I guess what I'm looking for is just what the film is doing or not doing that people feel films respectively shouldn't do or should do, and why.

Reading more comments, there are quite a few that seem to be complaining about realism issues.

How do you watch a film like this and think that it's shooting for realism? That's stupid beyond belief.

It is incredibly unrealistic! In real life this girl would be frightened out of her wits by this guy, not showing up on his doorstep! You would also be ruining that person's graduation by behaving in such a bizarre manner!

She would go nowhere near him!

The book was great and could have been a brilliant tribute to the '80s movies that Larry Doyle was inspired by but the adaptation was so bland and unimaginative and witless.
