The trash compactor scene

The team looked like the most idiotic group of people possible to put together in the entire city.

Not even checking if it is really off. And then when it suddenly turns on only one team member realizes and starts looking for where to unplug it. Most of them should be doing that or finding a power line they can cut.

But then I also have a question about the setting. I mean a full size man can fit into a garbage chute that directly goes to a garbage compactor that automatically goes on every hour. I'm not from the state or the the US but wouldn't that arrangement break some safety protocols? Because its pretty much a death trap. I know the show in many ways is probably not realistic but thought I'd ask about this one anyway.
