I dont have a problem seeing characters from any of these categories in general on TV, but come on this is getting ridiculous.

Did you watch the pilot episode? It's been awhile for me, but Captain Strand brought them in specifically because he was rebuilding the 126 after a tragedy killed almost all of the previous firefighters. I think Strand was hired because there was a diversity issue in Austen, so he planned it to be a diverse house. That's why most of them are from somewhere else.
